Be part of something new and exciting and help to save the lives of critically ill children nation-wide.
The Children’s Air Ambulance will be providing the first fully functioning helicopter transfer service for critically ill children. The service will launch towards the end of 2012 following a number of trial flights and preparations.
Many hospitals do not have a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, which means thousands of children are admitted to a hospital with inadequate facilities to treat them. As a result, these children need to be transferred to hospitals that do have the space and facilities.
Currently, the NHS finance teams across the UK that transfer around 5,500 children a year by road. Often, these journeys are lengthy and potentially threatening to the child’s health. It also adds a tremendous amount of stress, not only to the child, but also to their parents.
The Children’s Air Ambulance will provide a free, quicker and safer transfer system, meaning the child, their parents and the medical staff involved have a much safer and faster journey. The speed in which we can transfer is significantly increased - a typical 4 hour road journey from Chester to Great Ormond Street Hospital can be completed in as little as 60 minutes.
