GROSVENOR PARK OPEN AIR THEATRE ANNOUNCES ITS 2016 SEASON

Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre returns for another raucous summer! Our 2016 season will present Shakespeare’s As You Like It and The Two Gentlemen of Verona, and a new adaptation of Stig of the Dump.

With one of the century’s best-selling and enduring children’s classics, Clive King’s Stig of the Dump – the wonderful tale of the lovably time-shifting Neanderthal. This is brought to you by the same team as the sell-out hits The Wind in the Willows and The Secret Garden.

The classic and massively popular As You Like It is our headline Shakespeare for the season, with the bard’s ridiculous The Two Gentleman of Verona completing the line – that’s three comedies, although only one with a caveman…..

We welcomed nearly 26,000 customers last year, many of them our friends and returning regulars.  If you’ve been before, we’d love to see you again.  If not, come and find out what you are missing.

Artistic Director Alex Clifton said: “We are thrilled to be announcing our 7th season of Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre, at the heart of a monumental year for Chester’s cultural scene. Our 2016 season presents two very different Shakespeare comedies – an anarchic farce and a magical romance – which we can’t wait to share with our summer audiences. We are really proud to be bringing our 7th new play to Grosvenor Park, this year a reworking of the children’s classic Stig of the Dump by Jessica Swale. Above all we look forward to welcoming back our spontaneous and joyful audiences to our glorious open air festival.”

Produced by Storyhouse, the 2016 season will run from July 1st – August 21st 2016.

As You like It

Forced out of court and unable to declare their love, Rosalind and Orlando find themselves in exile in the glorious Forest of Arden. Along with a host of shepherds, courtiers and country folk they are caught up in a swirling kaleidoscope of love and lust amongst the greenery. But in this enchanted forest, love’s magic has the power to transform more than this young couple…

As You like It is one of Shakespeare’s most bewitching comedies, packed with poetry, song and heartfelt passions. Grosvenor Park will be turned into a magical, theatrical place where lovers meet, and anything can happen. Expect a happy ending – eventually – and plenty of laughs along the way.

The Two Gentleman of Verona

‘Tis pity love should be so contrary’

Shakespeare’s first play is also his most wildly passionate, an exuberant comedy of love charting the twists and turns of the faithful and the fickle as the city’s entanglements untangle in the forest.

Four young lovers on their gap-year chase each other across Italy, confused by their own adolescent desires, cross-dressing disguises, a band of singing outlaws and a roguish clown with a scamp of a dog.

This bad-mannered comedy about what it feels like to be young is bursting with joy, love and sun-kissed madness.

Stig of the Dump

Based on the novel by Clive King

Adapted by Jessica Swale

‘Don’t go near the quarry!’

An actual caveman? In the dump? Will anyone believe you, and what on earth could go wrong? A major new adaptation by Grosvenor Park of one of the best loved children’s classics, from the same team behind last year’s sell out The Wind in the Willows.

An absolute must for families and fans of time-shifting Neanderthals!
