Steps aimed at introducing the most generous package of childcare support for working parents have been introduced by the Welsh Government.
Wrexham’s Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths has welcomed the scheme which was part of Welsh Labour’s election manifesto and will be the most generous childcare offer in the UK.
The programme will offer working parents of 3 to 4 year olds 30 hours of free childcare for 48 weeks of the year.
Pilot schemes will now take place from September 2017 in specific areas across Wales before a wider rollout is confirmed at a later date. Testing the project will allow the Welsh Government to embed, develop and support the sector and workforce, ensuring everything is in place to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Lesley Griffiths AM said:
“The cost of childcare is a major issue for many families across Wrexham and Wales but I hope this Welsh Government commitment can offer a real lifeline to people.”
“Not only does the policy need to help working families financially, it must be accessible and flexible to provide the best possible support for their children’s needs.”
“This is a significant policy which requires a strong collaborative approach to achieve, but people should not be held back by their circumstances. I hope this scheme will address the issues surrounding childcare provision and support more families across Wrexham and Wales.”
